Templegate runs you through the contenders for the Betfred Ebor on the Knavesmire and gives you his verdict on the competitive contest
MAGIC CIRCLE has another York ace up his sleeve for the Betfred Ebor.
Ralph Beckett’s hope won well over two miles on Wednesday to take his course record to two wins from two visits.
I’m confident he has the pace for today’s shorter trip and the likely fast pace will be ideal.
Any overnight rain would only make me more confident.
SOLDIER IN ACTION 3/5
GET a piece of the Action. Flew home to win at Goodwood last time. Unexposed over today’s trip and has claims despite top weight.
LORD YEATS 3/5
LORD’s not almighty. Impressive win here in May. Followed up in a Newmarket Listed contest and tried in Group 3 last time. Likes to dominate and that won’t be easy.

WINNING STORY 2/5
NO happy ending. Best form has come on the all-weather. Bombed out at Royal Ascot and he now has plenty to prove.
SCARLET DRAGON 4/5
DRAGON could breathe fire. Victory at this meeting 12 months ago was one of four wins last term. Cracking Group 3 effort latest but he is unproven over the trip.
EL no. Third in this race three years ago but his course form since has been dire. Beat just one home last year but there was nothing wrong with his Group 2 effort last time.
CLEVER COOKIE 2/5
COOKIE Crumbles. Four-time course winner who has done most of his racing in Group contests. The wheels have fallen off this year and his just not as good as he was.

POWER cut. Fourth in this last year but hasn’t won in Britain for nearly three years. Should improve for comeback but doesn’t look the most reliable.
IVAN GROZNY 3/5
NOT a terrible bet. Smart hurdler and hasn’t had many Flat chances since joining Willie Mullins. Getting brought down was a far from ideal prep but he remains interesting.
TOP TUG 3/5
TAKE a Tug. Well beaten in this last year but he did win over this trip at Goodwood in May. Sound run from wide draw at Royal Ascot and a fast pace should help.
NATURAL SCENERY 4/5
SET for Scene. Last three wins came on the all-weather but she ran a screamer in a Goodwood Group 3 last time. Stays well and should put up a decent show.
STAR STORM 3/5
STORM brewing. Not won for nearly two years but has run sound races on his last two starts. Has stamina to prove but could go well.
NOT One to get stuck on. All-weather winner in March but twice soundly beaten since. Not seen since April and it’s hard to get excited about him.
ARCH VILLAIN 2/5
ONE of the baddies. Off the track for more than a year but he does go well when fresh. The competition he faces for the lead is more of a problem.
NAK could nick something. Runner-up over two miles at this meeting last year. Solid efforts this term but he’s not getting much help from the handicapper.
RUB long with Dub. Rattled off four-timer last season. Mugged close home in a rough Goodwood Group 3 last time. Unexposed over the trip and one of the more likely ones.
READY for take off. Progressive on the all-weather. Close third in the Northumberland Plate and just needs to take to turf to figure.
WILD HACKED 3/5
COULD go Wild. Did well last season and struck on the all-weather this spring. Tried in an Italian Group 2 last time and has the ability to get involved.
SEA sure. Good fifth from a wide draw in this race last year. Copped a high number again but that’s no bad thing. I like his chance at tasty odds.
MALEFICENT QUEEN 1/5
MAL’s no pal. Completed five-timer early last season but not won since. Well below form recently and faces some rivals at the peak of their powers.
MAGIC CIRCLE 5/5
THAT’s Magic. Perfect two from two at this track. The latest was a smooth two-mile win her on Wednesday. Doesn’t lack pace and there’s little doubt he’s well treated. Top chance.
