New York City — The president of the U.N. Security Council, Indonesia, stated on Tuesday it was “not in the position to take further action” on a U.S. quote to activate a return of all U.N. sanctions on Iran since there is no agreement in the 15-member body.

Thirteen council members revealed their opposition on Friday, arguing that Washington’s relocation is void provided it is utilizing a procedure concurred under a 2015 nuclear offer in between Iran and world powers that it gave up 2 years earlier.

Indonesia’s U.N. Ambassador Dian Triansyah Djani, council president for August, was reacting to a concern from Russia and China on the problem throughout a conference on the Middle East.

U.S. Ambassador Kelly Craft countered after Djani spoke.

“Let me just make it really, really clear: the Trump administration has no fear in standing in limited company on this matter,” she informed the council. “I only regret that other members of this council have lost their way and now find themselves standing in the company of terrorists.”

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated he activated on Thursday a 30-day procedure to reimpose all worldwide sanctions on Iran by lodging a problem with the council implicating Iran of breaching the 2015 nuclear offer.

Russia’s U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia stated he hoped the United States would now drop its quote to snapback Iran sanctions, “which is not only illegal, but simply will not lead to achieving the result that was envisaged by the United States.”

On Twitter, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif stated Pompeo’s “lawless bullying leaves U.S. isolated again.”

A representative for the U.S. objective to the United Nations stated it “is on firm legal ground to initiate the restoration of sanctions” and “the fact that some council members expressed disagreement …. does not have any legal effect.”

The United States argues that it can activate the procedure — referred to as snapback — since a 2015 Security Council resolution that preserves the nuclear offer still names it as an individual.

The Security Council resoundingly turned down a U.S. effort on Aug. 14 to extend an arms embargo on Iran beyond its expiration in October. Only the Dominican Republic signed up with Washington in voting yes.

The Dominican Republic and Niger, president of the council for September, are most likely to deal with U.S. pressure to neglect Indonesia’s evaluation and continue with the sanctions snapback procedure, diplomats stated.
