49 fighters have tried and failed to dethrone the boxing legend and the MMA star next in line should try a different approach
CONOR MCGREGOR will need the freak factor to do what 49 top-quality boxers have failed to do and beat Floyd Mayweather, according to Brit MMA pioneer Dan Hardy.
The Sky commentator for the billion-dollar August 26 super-fight is one of the few pundits giving the UFC ace a chance based on more than a puncher’s luck.
The analyst – who is disappointed McGregor’s potentially insightful training camp with Paulie Malignaggi descended into farce – believes he knows how McGregor could shock the world.
Instead of trying to better the efforts of boxing icons like Arturo Gatti, Oscar de la Hoya, Shane Mosley and Manny Pacquiao, Mystic Mac should stick to his MMA roots.
Hardy even understands – when asked how he can back McGregor after Mayweather schooled pound-for-pound ace Canelo – why boxing fans reckon he’s loopy.
Hardy said: “Absolutely. And if you were asking me to put my house on one or the other then it would be on a Floyd Mayweather by decision, because I think that is the safest bet in all of Floyd’s fights, because that is what you expect to happen.
“He is the best defensive boxer of all time, he is the best at fighting out of that defensive shell and not taking any risks.
“The difference with this and the other 49 fights is every one of those other guys – whether southpaw or orthodox – have moved like a boxer.

“You do get some boxers who move slightly differently or have slightly different techniques but – for the most part – because boxing has been established for so long we know what it takes to be a good boxer.
“It can be mastered.
“In martial arts and combat it is far from that – we are still figuring it out.
“In the UFC there are always new techniques and strategies being used.
“I think Conor brings that unpredictability.
“It is a look that Floyd Mayweather will not be able to replicate anywhere else.”
?McGregor v Mayweather Tips: 12/1 beast?
FLOYD MAYWEATHER is no KO machine.
His last knockout was Victor Ortiz in 2011 but that was shrouded in controversy. Before that, his previous victim had been Ricky Hatton in 2007.
So, even though we expect this fight to be one-sided, it will not end straight away.
Mayweather will toy with the inexperienced McGregor and we love Sun Bets’ 12/1 that Money wins in the fifth.

McGregor has physical advantages in youth, height and reach but Pretty Boy Floyd has been at the top of the game for two decades.
So Hardy hopes his fellow martial artist abandons traditional boxing point-punching and tries to smash through Money’s unrivalled defence.
The retired MMA star said: “As Conor says, this is a boxing match but he is going to teach him about combat sport; real fighting.
“What I expect is that Conor will not fight like a boxer.
“He is not going to get in there and try to replicate what Manny Pacquiao tried to do because that is not his skill set.
“What he can do is go in there and be Conor McGregor which is fighting from a longer range and covering distances quickly and punching through the guard.
“Boxers tend to try to create openings but Conor has the size, physicality and power to throw a punch down the barrel and knock Floyd against the ropes and that is what interests me.
“What happens when one of the best martial artists in the world faces one of the best boxers?
“My only concern and opinion is that it is under boxing rules – but that is only to keep Floyd safe.”
