ALL you need to know about the Investec Derby, one of Flat racing’s biggest races of the year

THE Derby is one of three Classics that form Flat racing’s Triple Crown.

Winners of the race include Sea The Stars, Galileo, Shergar, Nijinksy and Grundy.

What is the Derby?

The Derby is run over a distance of one mile and four furlongs. It is a Group 1 contest open to three-year-old colts and fillies, although fillies usually run in the Oaks which is run the day before.

The race takes place at Epsom racecourse in Surrey.

When is the 2017 Derby?

This year’s Derby takes place on June 3.

The race is due off at 4.30pm.

This year’s race is sponsored by Investec who have sponsored the race since 2009.

This year also saw the Epsom Hill rebranded to the Poundland Hill after Investec agreed a deal with Steinhoff International.

You can watch the Derby on ITV for the first time this year after the channel snapped up broadcasting rights for racing – with Ed Chamberlin to host.


Which horses are running?

At the moment, QIPCO 2,000 Guineas winner Churchill is the favourite for the race. However, he may not run.

The final field is yet to be declared but the home team looks likely to be headed by John Gosden’s Cracksman.

Aidan O’Brien will likely have a strong hand in the race and can choose from the likes of Churchill, Cliffs Of Moher, Venice Beach, Douglas Macarthur, Yucatan and Wings Of Eagles.
