IBF world super-featherweight champion’s career has been moulded by growing up on the mean streets of Baltimore
THE IBF king Gervonta Davis, who has been tipped for global stardom, defends his title against Liam Walsh in London on Saturday night.
Davis’ career has been moulded by his upbringing on the mean streets of Baltimore. Here, SunSport tells you all you need to know about the boxer…
Who is Gervanta? What is his background?
22-year-old American Davis is currently the IBF world super-featherweight champion.
Davis grew up in the crime-ridden streets of Baltimore, USA.
He was forced to fight his way through orphanages after being taken away from his drug addict parents.
The boxer has two older brothers and developed his technique by fending for sibling Demetris Fenwick during their childhood.
When asked whether his life compared to hallowing TV series The Wire, he said: “It’s a little worse.
“I was supposed to be on the show but then I got in trouble at school running the streets.”

Unbeaten Davis has a fight record of 17-0.
The American won his IBF title against Jose Pedraza in January 2017, stopping the Puerto Rican in the seventh round by TKO.
He has been dubbed the ‘Mini Mike Tyson’ and claims he is “here to kill” when in the ring.
Who will Gervonta Davis fight next?
Davis will fight Britain’s Liam Walsh in London on Saturday, May 20.
It will be his first defence of the IBF super-featherweight belt.
Who is Gervonta Davis’ promoter?
Davis is represented and promoted by boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Money, who sensationally won all 49 of his fights as a pro, has tipped Davis to follow in his footsteps.
The 40-year-old – who is set to come out of retirement to fight Conor McGregor – said: “There are a lot of fighters who are World champions who are not as big as Gervonta is.
“He’s connected to me but also he can fight. I would say this, Gervonta is not just the youngest World champion, he’s one of the most exciting fighters in boxing. We know there will be blood, sweat and tears.”
Davis’ coach, Calvin Ford, is also the inspiration behind the character Cutty on The Wire.
