He sprinted to gold at both the 2012 and 2016 Paralympics – and will be hoping to shine on the Strictly dancefloor
SPRINT star Jonnie Peacock won gold in both the 2012 and 2016 Paralympics.
He was appointed MBE in the 2013 New Year Honours for services to athletics – and has joined the line-up on Strictly Come Dancing 2017.
What is Jonnie Peacock’s background?
Jonnie Peacock was born in Cambridge on May 28, 1993.
At the age of five he contracted meningitis, which led to him having his right leg amputated below the knee.
He originally wanted to play football, but his athletics prowess was soon discovered during his time at school.
How has Jonnie Peacock’s athletics career worked out?
Jonnie Peacock set a new 100 metres world record in amputee sprinting in June 2010 in the US when he ran 10.85 seconds.
He won Olympic gold for the first time in front of a home audience at the London 2012 Games, when he ran 10.90 secs in the 100m T44 final.
Incredibly, the Cambridge runner then defended his Olympic crown by winning the 100m at the 2016 Rio Paralympics, even bettering his London time with 10.81secs.
When will Strictly Come Dancing 2017 start and who are the judges?
Strictly Come Dancing will launch on Saturday, September 9 at 7.00pm on BBC One, where the line-up will discover their professional partners.
Then, after a fortnight of feverish preparation, the 2017 series will kick off in earnest on September 23.
Strictly always airs on BBC One in two parts. The main show is on Saturday normally around 7pm and the results show airs on Sunday at a similar time.
There will be a Christmas special again in 2017, with the celebrity participants expected to be announced in early November.
This year sees a new judging lineup after head judge Len Goodman retired.
He will be replaced by Shirley Ballas who joins returning judges Bruno Tonioli, Darcey Bussell and Craig Revel-Horwood on the panel.
There will be three new professional dancers joining the existing pros; Dianne Buswell, Amy Dowden and Nadiya Bychkova, although we have to wait until launch night to see who is paired with who.
