How did it all start? From go-kart star to king of Formula One, SunSport unravels the three-time world champion
LEWIS Hamilton is Britain’s most successful Formula One driver of all time.
He has 52 Grand Prix victories – more than any other domestic racer.
How old is Lewis Hamilton?
Lewis was born on January 7, 1985, which makes him 31.
At the age of 10 the promising go-karter from the John Henry Newman School in Stevenage approached McLaren team principal Ron Dennis at the Autosport Awards ceremony and told him: “I want to race for you one day.”
Less than three years later McLaren and Mercedes-Benz signed him to their Young Driver Support Programme.

What happened in his debut F1 season?
Hamilton’s Formula One debut came in 2007 and that season he won four races and secured six poles.
Amazingly, he made the podium in his first nine races and outperformed champion team mate Fernando Alonso.
He was actually title-favourite until errors in final two rounds dropped him to second place behind Kimi Raikkonen.
How many times has Lewis been world champion?
Hamilton has been world champion three times – in 2008, 2014 and 2015.
In 2008, aged 23, he became the youngest ever world champion after five wins and a further five podiums took him to the title by a single point.
2014 saw him enjoy Mercedes F1 W05 Hybrid’s dominance, taking 11 wins en route to his second world title. Team-mate Rosberg pushed him all the way with the championship only decided in the final race.
Last year the intense rivalry with Rosberg continued but again Hamilton won 10 times to become only the 10th driver to become a triple world champion and the first Briton to claim back-to-back titles.
How much does Lewis Hamilton get paid?
In May Lewis signed a new three-year deal with Mercedes Benz that could be worth £192million, depending on bonuses.
So that’s around £64m a year if all goes well.
That more than his doubles his present salary of £25m a year.
Hamilton bought himself a multi-million pound pad in Monaco
What sponsorship deals does Lewis have?
In 2014, Lewis was named the most marketable sportsman in the world.
He currently has personal sponsorship deals with Bombardier, L’Oreal, Monster Energy and watchmaker IWC.
Combined the deals earn him an estimated £6m a year.
What is Lewis Hamilton’s net worth?
Hamilton is thought to be worth a cool £106m. He made the Times Rich List for the first time this year.
He recently bought himself an apartment in Monaco for a reported £12m, having splashed out £24m to buy his own private jet in 2012.
Shortly after signing his first F1 contract, Hamilton invested around £24m in a hotel development in Grenada, where his father was born.
The investment has been the subject of a long-running court battle between Hamilton’s investment company and the Grenada Government, who subsequently withdrew the sale of the land.
The courts ruled last year in Hamilton’s favour.
