German southpaw has an undefeated pro record of 5-0 while the Bray fighter boasts a 4-0 record
NINA MEINKE is not exactly a household name in global boxing, but the German could make herself very well-known in Ireland this weekend.
Meinke was named as Katie Taylor’s opponent for the Bray boxer’s fifth pro bout.
Who is Nina Meinke?
Meinke, who also fights under the alias ‘The Brave’, is in a similar position in her professional career as Katie Taylor with both having only turned pro recently.
But the southpaw fighter does not have the experience nor the Olympic record of her Irish counterpart.
The bout with Katie Taylor is the first time Meinke will have fought outside her native Germany and is being labelled both competitors’ toughest fight yet.
But the 23-year old German, trained by former World champion Sven Ottke, is no stranger to the UK as she boxed out of Scarborough as a teenager.
Meinke has been boxing professionally since May 2016 and has won two of her five fights by KO.
She claimed her first silverware in her last fight when she beat Hasna Tukic in the first round last March to win the IBF Youth Super-Featherweight title.
Here she is boxing and training with partner and fellow boxer Sedar Sahin.
And Taylor is taking nothing for granted at Wembley Stadium this weekend.
She said of her German opponent: “I’ve watched Meinke and she’s a very strong opponent.
“She’s unbeaten so it’s a step up for me and I’m sure she’ll be very confident.
“It’s obviously a massive opportunity for both of us being a world title eliminator and it’s my first scheduled 10 round fight so I’m relishing the challenge.”
