THEY say the UFC heavyweight champion is the ‘Baddest Man on the Planet’ and happy-go-lucky Ohio firefighter Stipe Miocic carries that moniker with ease.
He may not be threatening to meet, but inside the Octagon he’s one of the most dangerous big men to pull on those famous UFC gloves.
Superb wrestling, knockout power in both hands and some of the best cardio in the division has helped Miocic rise the ranks.
Who is Stipe Miocic?
Miocic fulfilled his destiny of becoming UFC heavyweight champion with a stunning one-punch KO of Fabricio Werdum in Brazil last yeat to put him on top of the world.
He then knocked out Dutch fighter Alistair Overeem in the first round to make a successful defence of the belt in September.
The UFC heavyweight title has never been successfully defended more than twice in a row, and Miocic aims to not just match, but break that record in 2017.
What is Miocic’s background?
While most top-level UFC fighters operate as full-time professional athletes, Miocic splits his time between fighting and serving as an Ohio firefighter and paramedic.
Despite the additional pressure and prestige of being the UFC heavyweight champion, Miocic says he has no plans on abandoning his firefighter job in order to focus on defending his title. Both jobs mean the world to him, as he explained.
“I love what I do, both aspects – fighting and being a firefighter and paramedic,” he said.
He was born in 1982 to Croatian parents, and as a student he played baseball and wrestled before turning to MMA.
When did Miocic make his debut?
Miocic made his UFC debut against Joey Beltran on October 8, 2011 at UFC 136 and won the fight via unanimous decision.
One judge gave him all three rounds, while the other two had it to Miocic by a point.
It was obvious Miocic was seen as the man to go onto big things, going in against a fighter like Beltran who is always ready to slug it out.
When is Miocic’s next fight?
Miocic’s next bout is will see him face a formidable former champion, with Werdum and fellow former belt holder Cain Velasquez set to do battle for the right to face him in the New Year.
And given Miocic’s stunning form, you’ll find a brave man who’ll bet against the proud native of Cleveland, Ohio retaining his title next time around.
How much money has Miocic made in UFC?
GIt is believed Miocic has made around $1.5million since joining the UFC organisation.
Heavyweight fights always garner huge exposure, both in press conferences and ticket sales.
Against Overeem, despite Miocic winning the bout, he is believed to have earned $200,000 less than his Dutrch opponent, who he knocked out in the first round.
It is likely now Miocic will be the one commanding headline pay.

Mrs Miocic works as a nurse, and speaking to Cleveland19.com, she said: “It’s what he loves and he’s made all the necessary preparations. And he’s safe. It is what it is, once you’re out there.
“I’m always just worried about injuries, and making sure he walks out with very minor injuries, hopefully.
