The former Team GB high jumper was riding home from a party in Kingston in a convoy with Usain Bolt when he reportedly swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle.

Who is Germaine Mason and where does he come from?

Germaine Mason was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1983.

In 2006, he switched allegiance to Great Britain, two years before winning silver in Beijing.

Mason was eligible to represent Team GB due to his father being born in London, although it was his mother who persuaded him to make the switch.

He had a = five-year-old son named Jelani.

What were his career highlights?

Mason won silver in the World Junior Championships in Chile in 2000, and added a bronze in his home country in 2002.

He then went on to win bronze in the World Indoor Championships in Budapest in 2004.

And Mason’s phenomenal Olympic silver in Beijing was achieved without any lottery funding.

Mason was on a night out with triple world and Olympic champion Usain Bolt, along with sprinter Michael Frater, and the group were riding home in convoy.

The high jumper is understood to have lost control of his bike when he swerved to avoid a vehicle coming in the opposite direction.

Bolt is believed to have rushed to the scene after the accident.
