Here is everything you need to know as motorsport loses a legend.

Who was Nicky Hayden and where does he come from?

Nicky Hayden was born on July 31, 1981, in Owensboro, Kentucky.

He came from a racing family with both his father and his two brothers being professional riders.

His traditional racing number, 69, was chosen because it was the number his father used.

While in high school Hayden raced Honda RC45 superbikes, and on board a privateer Honda, he won the AMA Supersport championship in 1999.

In 2016 he got engaged to Jackie Marin.

What were Nicky Hayden’s biggest achievements?

After just two races with American Honda in World Superbikes, Hayden was snapped up by the Repsol Honda MotoGP team in 2003, becoming team-mate of racing legend Valentino Rossi.

His fifth place finish in his debut season earned him the Rookie of the Year award.

In 2006 he went into the last race of the world championship eight points behind Valentino Rossi, who had then moved to Yamaha, but managed to win the title after the Italian crashed in the 5th lap.

That achievement made him the only American ever to win MotoGP and the first American Grand Prix motorcycling World Champion since 1993.

Hayden was to spend 13 years with MotoGP before returning to Superbikes in 2016.
