As part of its continuing efforts to purge the chaff from its social media network, on Wednesday Twitter revealed it would be eliminating locked accounts from Twitter users’ fan counts.

Locked accounts are those that Twitter has actually locked the owner out of, either briefly or completely, for factors such as suspect habits that shows the account may have been jeopardized. So if a few of your fans have actually been hacked or socially crafted, they will not count towards your following on Twitter.

In a blog post, Vijaya Gadde (‎@vijaya‎), Twitter’s legal, policy and trust and security lead, described, “In most cases, these accounts were created by real people but we cannot confirm that the original person who opened the account still has control and access to it.” This concept is that this will enhance “account credibility” given that fan counts are public.

“Most people will see a change of four followers or fewer,” Gadde composed.

A New York Times examination in January discovered business that generate income by pumping up the variety of fans for stars, organization executives and even among Twitter’s own board members. Twitter reacted by purging countless phony accounts. The business now supposedly purges a million accounts typically every day

That was incorrect: Twitter says locked accounts are not counted in those metrics, and so this change won’t impact them. The change will impact follower counts, not MAU or DAU.
