Beijing updated its heat caution on Friday to “red”, the greatest in its color-coded alert system, as numerous parts of the Chinese capital roasted in temperature levels as much as 40 degrees Celsius (104 F).
The main temperature level, determined in Beijing’s southern suburban areas, hit 40 degrees C simply after 1: 30 p.m. (0530 GMT) on Friday, to peak at 40.3 degrees C (10454 F) by 4 p.m., the local observatory stated.
“This is the first time since the establishment of the observatory that there has been a high temperature of more than 40 degrees C for two consecutive days,” Zhang Yingxin, its chief forecaster, informed a press instruction.
The observatory was established in 1951.
“The temperature outside is just too hot,” stated a 28- year-old Beijing citizen, surnamed Zhang, who operates in the food and drinks sector.
“I’m definitely worried, but I think I’m still young and can handle it. But I hope that older people will go out as little as possible.”
On Thursday, the optimum temperature level in the city of almost 22 million breached 41 degrees C (1058 F), shattering the record for the most popular day in June.
