The Biden administration revealed Friday it would immediately forgive $39 billion in trainee financial obligation for 804,000 customers.

The relief is an outcome of repairs to the trainee loan system’s income-driven payment strategies. Although the forgiveness is a substantial triumph for customers, it is relief to which they were entitled, stated Persis Yu, deputy executive director at the Student Borrower Protection Center.

“[M] ake no error– over 804,000 individuals are getting relief with this action since of 804,000 failures– and this is just the suggestion of the iceberg,” Yu stated in a declaration. “Working people have been made collateral damage by a dysfunctional student loan system.”

The statement comes weeks after the Supreme Court overruled President Joe Biden’s sweeping trainee loan forgiveness strategy, which would have provided relief to about 37 million individuals.

The Education Department will inform qualified customers in the coming days.
