Another United States reporter,WallStreetJournal press reporterEvanGershkovich, was jailed in the exact same city,800 miles east ofMoscow, on espionage charges in 2015.
Karelina is implicated of‘providing financial assistance to a foreign state in activities directed against the security of’, according to a declaration by the FSB,Russia’s security service,Reuters reported.
It is alleged she transferred $51.8 to Razom for Ukraine, a US charity describing itself as ‘actively contributing to the establishment of a secure, prosperous, and democratic Ukraine’.
The organisation’s website says it uses donations to fund food packages for Ukrainian families, children’s summer camps, first aid kits, psychological support for vulnerable kids, field medic packs, and home repair kits.
Karelina now faces up to life in prison after Putin increased the sentence for treason from 20 years in 2023.
An FSB spokesperson said: ‘Since February 2022, she has been proactively collecting funds in the interests of one of the Ukrainian organisations, which were subsequently used to purchase tactical medicine items, equipment, weapons and ammunition by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.’
According to Karelina’s Facebook page, she’s originally from Yekatarinburg and studied at the Urals Federal University based there.
The 33-year-old is understood to have gained US citizenship in 2021. She was visiting Yekaterinburg at the time of her arrest.
It was in the US that the FSB alleges she ‘repeatedly took part in public actions in support of the Kyiv regime’, The Moscow Times reported.
She was initially arrested at the end of January and sentenced to 14 days in prison for ‘swearing’, according to Mediazona, an independentRussian outlet.The charge was later on updated to treason.
