Artificial intelligence may be able to pass a Wharton MBA examination, however it can’t win a Grammy.

That’s according to Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, which provides the Grammy Awards yearly to acknowledge leading contributions to the music market.

“No, we’re not going to award AI creativity,” Mason stated recently at the Fast Company Innovation Festival2023 “But we’re not going to disclude or disqualify the creators working with it.”

The Recording Academy just recently released brand-new eligibility requirements for the 66 th yearly Grammy Awards, which will happen in February2024 The standards set out 2 classifications under which an AI-assisted tune may receive award factor to consider.

“If there’s AI performing the song, but there’s humans writing it, then it’s eligible for a writing category. If AI wrote the song but a human singer … is singing the song, then it’s going to be eligible for a performance category,” Mason described.

The upgraded policy follows a confidential artist– called Ghostwriter– sent a tune for the awards entitled “Heart on My Sleeve,” which utilized AI to imitate the voices of vocalists Drake and TheWeeknd Earlier this month, Mason informed the New York Times that the tune was “absolutely eligible” for a Grammy in the “creative” classifications, like Song of the Year, “because it was written by a human.”

It’s disqualified for awards like Best Rap Performance since the “vocals were not legally obtained, the vocals were not cleared by the label or the artists and the song is not commercially available,” Mason included a current Instagram video.

At the Fast Company celebration, Mason suggested that this year’s guidelines might not remain in impact for long.

“This is going to change quickly,” he stated. “These things are happening now, so much more quickly, we have to be able to pivot. We have to be able to adjust awards categories, procedures, processes … everything about our organization.”

Sixty percent of independent artists currently utilize AI to make tunes, according to a current study of 1,299 artists by Ditto, a music circulation business. The artists stated they utilize AI for support in locations like songwriting, music production, mastering music and even music art work.

Mason stated he supports a few of those innovative procedures, and acknowledges that music will develop as AI continues to grow– however hisNo 1 objective is to boost human artists.

“The Academy is here to support and advocate and protect and represent human artists and human creators. Period,” he stated in his Instagram video.
