WASHINGTON– Democratic legislators on Thursday applauded employees at a New Mexico branch of Wells Fargo for ending up being the very first branch of the country’s fourth-largest bank to unionize.

“Your success brings the fight for the Dignity of Work directly to Wall Street’s front door,” saidSen Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, chairman of the Senate Banking Committee.

“I look forward to watching your movement grow from branch to branch across the country,” Brown stated in his declaration.

Workers at the bank’s Albuquerque branch voted 5 to 3 on Wednesday to unionize under the Communications Workers of America’s Wells Fargo Workers United.

The vote made Wells Fargo the very first significant U.S. lending institution with a unionized labor force.

“This is the very first union at a huge bank in the nation! #UnionStrong,”Rep Melanie Stansbury, a New Mexico Democrat, composed in a post on the social networks website X, previously called Twitter.

The arranging relocation follows effective settlements by the United Auto Workers, SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America after weeks of strikes previously this year.

But employees at an Alaska Wells Fargo branch recently withdrew a petition to form a union.

Wells Fargo was amongst the banks considered in an industry-wide examination into prejudiced home mortgage financing in 2022.
