A mum who left her two-year-old son in an overheated room so he died of thirst has been jailed for seven and a half years.

The child named Leon was left to die in the woman’s flat in the town of Grevenbroich, western Germany.

Mönchengladbach regional court heard how the 28-year-old mum admitted feeling overwhelmed unable to cope when she abandoned her son but said she didn’t expect him to die.

The woman, who has not been named due to the country’s strict privacy laws, put Leon in a sleeping bag and placed him in a cot on the evening of April 14, 2019.

The flat’s heating wouldn’t work at the time, so she put a fan heater in front of the bed and only came back to check on her son the morning of the day after, the court heard.

Because an exact time of death could not be determined, the judge accepted the prosecution’s request and said it couldn’t be proven that the mother-of-two killed Leon.

Instead she was today found guilty of attempted manslaughter by omission and bodily harm resulting in death.
