Ms Beccau explained that a gas leak was the likely cause of the explosion, and that CCTV footage was being examined for clues.

She added: ‘We need to ask if non-respect of regulations or individual recklessness could have led to this explosion, which led to injuries.’

Ms Beccau confirmed that 37 people including children were hurt – four critically – and that survivors were already offering witness statements. None have yet been idenfified.

The Paris American Academy was founded by U.S. musician Richard Roy in 1965 and offersed courses in fashion, interior design, fine arts and creative writing.

It is on the Rue St Jacques and describes itself as ‘Paris’s number one bilingual design school situated in the heart of the Latin Quarter.’

One eye-witness said: ‘It’s an absolute disaster – we smelt gas, and then there was a huge explosion.

‘Window caved in, and then there was dust and rubble everywhere. It is extremely frightening.’

I was at home writing. I thought it was a bomb,’ said Monique Mosser, an art historian.

‘A neighbour knocked on the door and told me that the fire brigade were asking us to evacuate as quickly as possible.

The gas network in Paris has been described as a ‘ticking time bomb’ because it is in such a poor state of repair.

Following explosions in recent years, city councillor Alexandre Vesperini said the whole system was ‘rundown and poorly’ managed.

‘I don’t blame gas fitters, but I have to point out that the network, set up at the start of the 20th century, is a veritable ticking time bomb,’ said Mr Vesperini in 2019, following a gas leak at a bakers that led to disaster.

‘Paris City Council finds itself in a very difficult situation as these types of accidents could happen in a great number of places across the capital.’
