Data on sea surface area heights around the globe from the worldwide Surface Water and Ocean Topography objective yields an enchanting view of the world’s ocean.

The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite is sending out down alluring views of Earth’s water, consisting of a worldwide composite of sea surface area heights. The satellite gathered the information imagined above throughout SWOT’s very first complete 21- day science orbit, which it finished in between July 26 and August 16.

SWOT is determining the height of almost all water on Earth’s surface area, offering among the most in-depth, extensive views yet of the world’s oceans and freshwater lakes and rivers. The SWOT science group made the measurements utilizing the groundbreakingKa- bandRadarInterferometer(Ka RIn) instrument. With 2 antennas spread out 33 feet(10 meters )apart on a boom, Ka RIn produces a set of information swaths( tracks noticeable in the animation) as it circles around the world, bouncing radar pulses off the water’s surface area to gather surface-height measurements.

“The detail that SWOT is sending back on sea levels around the world is incredible,” statedParag Vaze, SWOT job supervisor at NASA’sJetPropulsionLaboratory inSouthernCalifornia“The data will advance research into the effects of climate change and help communities around the world better prepare for a warming world.”
