E-cigarettes can trigger modifications in the lungs at the cellular and molecular level, consisting of modifications in the lung immune cell structure and transformed gene and protein levels in the lungs, according to the findings of brand-new research study on mice.

New research study released in The FASEB Journal suggests that e-cigarettes can trigger cellular and molecular modifications in the lungs. Specifically, extended inhalation of electronic cigarette aerosols by mice triggered modifications in the animals’ lung immune cell structure and transformed gene and protein levels in the lungs.

Investigators discovered that even low direct exposure to aerosols from JUUL– a brand name of e-cigarettes popular with youth and young people– had substantial effects.

“The health consequences of vaping are not known. Our results show that inhalation of the vapor generated by a popular brand of e-cigarette causes widespread changes inside the lungs, data that further highlight that these products are not inert and may lead to lung damage if used long term,” stated matching author Carolyn J. Baglole, PhD, of McGill University, in Montreal, Quebec.
